Research

Useful websites:
bullyingnoway.gov.au/
typesofbullying.org/

We split our roles equally however Alsha and I did a lot of the main research.
We used a survey to get opinions on bullying from students and teachers in Island School

Survey results
The survey we sent out to almost the whole of Island School had came back with surprisingly overwhelming responses. We got around 155 responses from the survey, however the surveymonkey website only allowed us to view 100 of those answers. We think that it is still a good enough sample of results to analyse and to work with. The responses were mostly very honest which made the results more reliable.
Have you ever been bullied?
60% said Yes
40% said No
Do you know anyone that has been bullied?
86% said Yes
14% said No
If Yes, What type of bullying was it? (90 answers)
74 people said verbal
40 people said cyber
26 people said physical
2 people said all of the above
4 people didn’t witness any
How serious is the issue of bullying? (99 answers)
43% said Unacceptable
14% said Terrible
17% said Bad
21% said Average
3% said Good
1% said Very Good
Why Do You Think bullies bully?
Many people responded saying that the bullies are insecure and feel bad about themselves. Therefore they result to bullying to have power over others and to feel better about themselves. It can also be because they are ignored at home or within their friends, causing them to put other people down to gain attention and to joke around.
-Project their own insecurities and flaws onto others
-It is cathartic for the bully (a release)
-Dominance in the social hierarchy (popularity), Fitting in
-Jealousy
-To conceal the problems that they are dealing with inside
-They think that pushing others down can make them stronger

What would you do if you were a victim of bullying?
According to the 100 responses collected from the survey:
-Stand up for myself
-Fight Back
-Lash Out
-Tell someone trustworthy (friends, parents, teachers)
-Do Nothing (which is the worst thing to do)
-Try to block out the bullying, ignorance
-Stay Strong, get friends for moral support

As I was a victim of bullying, it took me a long time to find the courage to tell my mum about it. The bullying went on for months, and though it wasn't particularly bad or traumatic, bullying is bullying. Ideally people should tell teachers or parents or their friends if they're being bullied but that's easier said than done.” -Anonymous Island School Student

Views on Bullying
-Absolutely unacceptable
-No one should suffer from others’ insecurity lashouts
-There is no plausible reason for the act of bullying
-It is an issue that is very hard to get rid of completely because of human nature
-Both the victim and the bully need help and guidance to deal with what they are going through
-Very damaging to others self esteem and can even affect them later in life
-Cruel, unnecessary and can lead to very serious consequences
Of course it should not exist at all. Bullying is a major problem that is overblown by the fact that many victims are not willing to approach parents or teachers about the matter in fear of their bullies doing something in retaliation. Bullying happens a surprising amount, even offhand comments that don't seem to be particularly bad can be a form of bullying and because things like these are so deeply rooted in the 'culture' of young people today, it will be difficult to eliminate. People need to understand that it is important to respect each other and that's one of the root causes of so many of the problems we have in society, ranging from corruption to drug use to abuse.”- Anonymous Island School Student

What action should be taken about this issue?
-Public Awareness, Educating the young
-Counselling sessions
-Bullies should receive guidance on how to act and deal with their own demons
-Teachers should always be on the lookout with signs of bullying
-Encourage students to step forward to report bullying incidents
-Students should learn how to stand up for themselves
-Building up students’ self esteem
